Multimedia/Inquiry Lesson
This lesson was created with a SMARTBoard template and works as an interactive activity that keeps students engaged while conveying the basics of poetry reading and analysis. It includes multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank assessments.
Direct Instruction Lesson
While looking at the text of a poem is important for analysis, poems are ultimately meant to be read. To understand the way that sounds and emphasis works within the poem, the poem must be listened to. As a way to differentiate this lesson, I project a video of Maya Angelou reading her poem "And Still I Rise."
Post-Assessment Project
For my final assessment in this unit, the students will create a Glogster for a poem of their choice. The glogster should include quotes from the poem, SOAPSTone analysis and 3-5 examples of figurative language, and images.
