Concept Lesson
This is an introductory lesson for the Poetry Unit. It is meant to introduce students to poetry without frightening them away; many students can be intimidated by poetry because they think they don't "get it." This lesson shows them that poetry can really be almost anything, including the songs they listen to. During the lesson students will create their own graphic organizers for notes.
SMARTBoard Lesson
This is a lesson template that utilizes a SMARTBoard. It is interactive and includes multiple choice assessments. This lesson teaches the basics of how to read and analyze poetry.
Direct Instruction Lesson
This lesson builds upon the previous two. In this lesson students directly analyze poetry using the SOAPSTone method.
Cooperative Learning Lesson
In this lesson students work in groups to analyze Native American poetry. Instead of a purely written assessment, each student group creates a product that incorporates description, analysis, and visual art.
Choice Lesson
This is a Socratic Seminar lesson that asks students to verbally discuss and analyze Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night." Students will evaluate their peers as well as reflect on their own performance, all while adhering to the etiquette of the Socratic Seminar guidelines.
